In the dead of Christmas night 1776, Washington, and his beleaguered remaining force, secretly crossed the ice flows of the Delaware River. With no light and in some cases no shoes, they managed to get Cannon, horse and about 2400 men through the snow sleet and ice to the New Jersey side. Though not all stayed out of the river, none drowned. Without this difficult crossing and the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, the American Colonies were very unlikely to succeed in their scission and the United States of America would never come into existence.
